How God Got Me Here

How God Got Me Started in Music Ministry

I had wanted for MANY years to sing.  I wanted to have a sound system and travel to churches for concerts, special music, etc.  It was a dream that I thought would have to die, because I didn’t know how to open doors to make it happen, and God wasn’t opening doors for it.  I was even stubborn about it when He called me several years ago into Sign Language.  I argued with God.  “But God, I want to sing.” He said, “But I’m calling you to sign.”  And it went back and forth that way until finally, I gave into His will and jumped 100% into Sign Language.  When I did that, God said, “Okay, now you can have BOTH.  I didn’t want your hands, I didn’t want your voice. I wanted your OBEDIENCE.”  (which God also gave me a song about that called Obedience).

Because of my OWN desire to sing, I wanted to be sure it was God giving me the “go ahead” and not myself.  I asked God for the “handwriting on the wall”.  That week, I received telephone calls from three different churches asking me to sing.  Two were for special music.  But the third was from Pastor Kelley who wanted me to sing in the revival at his church.  He needed me for EITHER the Monday OR Tuesday of the revival.  He had a different person coming in each night for music rather than having a song evangelist.  My calendar was clear for both days and it was about 3 months in advance so I blocked off both days not knowing which one he would end up needing me.

Meanwhile, my husband and I decided that I should invest in a small sound system since God had given me the confirmation with the 3 churches calling. I didn’t know where to begin to look for a sound system.  A catalog showed up at my house with the mail.  I had never heard of it before.  It was Musician’s Friend.  I glanced through it and found a small sound system that appeared to be exactly what I needed.  The only drawback was that it cost $700!!!  I waited on God to miraculously “drop $700.00 in my lap”.  It didn’t happen.  I felt that God was telling me I needed to put my money where my faith was. So we decided to open a savings account and put in money as we could for the express purpose of purchasing that sound system.  With five children, a house, two vehicles and all the expenses that go with them, we found it difficult to save the money, but managed to get the balance up to $400.  We seemed to hit a standstill at that amount.

The Friday before the revival was to begin on Sunday, Pastor Kelley called me and asked me if I was still available.  I told him I could sing either day and asked him which day he wanted me to come.  He said, “Well…I have a situation.  Some of my other music people have fallen through.  Would you be available for three nights?  I’ve talked to the Board and they have agreed to let me hire someone.”  Pastor Kelley continued, “We can pay you $100…” I immediately knew I would turn down the money because I had never “charged” a church for coming in to sing before.  But when I opened my mouth to refuse the money, God wouldn’t let me speak.  Then Pastor Kelley finished his sentence, “…per night.”  Then I knew why God would not let me speak.  I realized in an instant that it was God’s provision for the sound system.  That $300 combined with the $400 in the savings account was just enough to purchase the sound system I had found in the catalog.

Since I made that decision to obey God, He has blessed me in so many ways.  He continues to give me original songs.  One of them, (Like A Butterfly) He literally gave to me OVERNIGHT. All I had to do was pray and ask Him for it.  It was so awesome!  I have been singing in churches for revivals, and other events.  (Check out my Calendar of Events Page)

Because I obeyed God in the Sign Language, He blessed me with a wonderful job.  I was working for almost 5 years in the public school system as a Sign Language Interpreter. I had never dreamed of having a job like that.  I loved the job and I had summers off to work with Teen Camp, Kids Camp, concerts, etc. From August, 2005 until June, 2011, I taught Jr. High and High School students at a Christian school.  I LOVED IT!! I went back into an interpreting job in a public school setting until our move BACK to Texas in the summer of 2014.  I'm hoping to get certified as an Interpreter in Texas and resume my career soon.....unless, of course, God has other plans!

God is still on the Throne and I praise His name.  My story is not finished, of course, but the bottom line is that through it ALL……………

God is so good!
